Inner West Council and a childcare co-ordinator are facing criminal charges over the treatment of children at an after school hours care facility.
The Department of Education has laid five charges each against the council and the co-ordinator alleging they exposed children to harm and did not adequately supervise them.
The charges relate to incidents at the Stanmore out of hours school care program where children are understood to have left the premises while under the care of workers.
The program operated out of Stanmore Public School but was run by Inner West Council.
The case was due to be discussed in confidential session at Tuesday evening’s council meeting and will be mentioned in the Newtown Local Court next month.
Council’s lawyers were expected to brief councillors on the situation ahead of the firs court date.
Inner West Council declined to comment on Monday “while the matter was before the courts” when asked a series of questions relating to the incidents.
The childcare co-ordinator in question is understood to have been working for the council for almost a decade.
Both council and the individual are facing maximum total fines of up to $34,000 if convicted of all the offences.
The Department of Education was also contacted for comment on Monday but has yet respond.
