RETIRED Fraud Squad commander Colin Dyson could have easily grown up to be a carpenter, following in the footsteps of his father.

But it was an encounter with a fellow student at St Joseph’s High School in Revesby who mentioned he was applying to be a police cadet that sparked a light bulb moment for the 17-year-old.

Mr Dyson, who has lived in the inner west since 1987, said he still doesn’t know where that light bulb moment came from, but said it was one his best decisions he ever made.

He was sworn in as a probationary constable in August 1972, on his 19th birthday.

From there, he joined Bankstown patrols before being trained as a detective 18-months later.

He moved to Campsie station, Hurstville detectives and then on to the Fraud Squad, where he spent 35 years.

“I was taken there on the promise I would only be there for three months, and I was still there 35 years later because I learnt to love it,” Mr Dyson said.

In August 2013, he made the decision to retire.

Although retired, Mr Dyson is still very much involved in the police community as deputy chairman of the Police Bank.

Mr Dyson was recognised at the recent Retired Police Day, held at Petersham RSL Club. He was acknowledged alongside retired policemen and women Paul Biscoe, Belinda Dunn, Bruce Howe, Rodney Gray, Simon Judge, Ron Page, Jennifer Stoked and Kerry Toohey.
