Craig Laundy is considering his political future and has not yet decided whether he will recontest the federal seat of Reid.
Mr Laundy is on leave but Liberals fear he will be the next federal MP to quit politics — just months out from the election — after Jobs Minister Kelly O’Dwyer threw in the towel on the weekend.
A spokesman for Mr Laundy told the Courier: “At this stage Craig is still deciding if he will recontest the seat of Reid at the next federal election.”
Mr Laundy holds the seat on a slim 4.7 per cent margin and Labor’s candidate Sam Crosby is considered strong.
Mr Crosby went to Rosebank College in Five Dock and has strong links to the local community including as a member of St Mary’s Concord St Vincent de Paul Society and Drummoyne Rowing Club.
Mr Laundy was a key ally of Malcolm Turnbull and resigned from the frontbench in disgust after Mr Turnbull was dumped.
In October Mr Laundy told the Courier the voters in the seat of Wentworth had clearly punished the Liberals for dropping Malcolm Turnbull as leader.
Mr Laundy said the treatment of Mr Turnbull was the key reason behind the 19 per cent swing against the Liberals in Wentworth — the largest federal swing since the 1992 by-election for Bob Hawke’s former seat of Wills — delivering a victory to independent Kerryn Phelps.
He described the marginal seat as “a Labor seat”.
Reid had been held by either the ALP or Jack Lang’s Labor breakaway parties for its entire history, while Lowe had a history of alternating between the ALP and Liberal Party.
