NEW peak hour clearways are set to be introduced along one of the inner west’s busiest roads.

Roads and Maritime Services said the new restrictions on Lyons Rd from October 29 were aimed at reducing congestion between Five Dock and Drummoyne.

The clearways will apply to both directions of the 3km road from 6am to 10am and 3pm to 7pm on weekdays.

No stopping zones will also be added to intersections between Cometrowe and Lithgow Sts from 10am to 3pm on weekdays and 9am to 6pm on weekends and public holidays.

The restrictions were originally due to be introduced last year, but were postponed by RMS after submissions from residents and business owners.

The concerns raised included loss of parking spaces along Lyons Rd, which shop owners said would impact their trade.

To offset the loss of spaces, RMS said it would provide funding to Canada Bay Council to introduce “reconfigured” time parking spaces in streets joining Lyons Rd including Janet St, Gears Ave, Byrne Ave, Barney St and Brent St.

An RMS spokesman said the timed spaces were aimed at “providing alternative business customer parking during the new clearway hours and no stopping times.”

Daniel Cordaro, from the Drummoyne Chamber of Commerce, previously told the Courier business owners feared that the strategy could kill off their trade as parking is lost.

“The shops along Lyons Rd are a vital part of our community and taking parking away will have an impact,” he said.

“The concern is that people won’t be able to find a park and will keep going.”

Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas called on the State Government to review the changes after six months.

“Any changes to parking in our area needs to balance the needs of our resident on the roads and that of our local businesses,” he said in a statement.

“While the City of Canada Bay is happy to have successfully secured RMS funding for additional on-street parking in Janet St, we remain concerned about the effect of these changes to the local businesses on Lyons Rd in Drummoyne.”

The clearways are part of the NSW Government’s $121 million Clearways Program, which aims “to reduce delays by maximising use of existing road space”.

The RMS spokesman said vehicles parked in the clearway from October 29 risk being fined and towed.
