The inner west arm of a $198 million project to transform Parramatta Rd has been adopted by Inner West Council.
The NSW State Government-funded project will connect Parramatta Rd to the city and the inner west, from Camperdown and Stanmore to Rozelle.
The revamp also aims to reduce the noise coming from Parramatta Rd to local streets.
The final Parramatta Rd improvement program was endorsed at the Inner West Council meeting on Tuesday night.
The proposal covers Leichhardt and Camperdown to Parramatta Rd, and Johnstons Creek.
In the “degraded and hostile” Leichhardt precinct, Rofe St, Renwick St, Norton St, Balmain Rd, Catherine St and Crystal St will be given a facelift, as well as Pyrmont Bridge Road in Camperdown.
Artworks for the Norton St design show lights hung over the street.
The streets are planned to be “improved” through tree canopies, relaid footpaths to replace “its existing cracked and broken form” and street furniture.
As well, Petersham St will be converted into a pocket park.
The project will also increase the connections between neighbourhoods across Parramatta Rd.
A new cycleway is proposed for Renwick St, Catherine St, Balmain Rd and Dot Ln between Norton St and Balmain Rd.
In Camperdown, pedestrian and cycle links are proposed to connect Parramatta Rd to the City of Sydney cycle links along Johnstons Creek.
It will link Parramatta Rd’s Camperdown and Stanmore ends to Rozelle Bay and Bicentennial Park.
A cycleway will also connect Pyrmont Bridge Rd between Parramatta Rd and Mallet St, with a more direct route from Parramatta Road through Glebe and Pyrmont.
An Inner West Council spokesperson said: “The projects aim to build on the existing strengths of the neighbourhoods and reflect their sense of place and character.”
