Inner west commuters could soon see changes to parking around light rail stations, with some general parking proposed to be allocated to car share.

The Inner West Council will trial providing up to 20 spaces for car share across the light rail stations as part of integrating car share with public transport.

The change would encourage commuters who use light rail to adopt shared vehicles for travel between their home and the station.

A spokeswoman for the council said residents and business operators would be consulted before any decision to convert parking spaces to car share.

The trial would allow people to make more sustainable transport choices, she said.

Representatives of car share operator GoGet, which formed in Newtown, proposed the changes to the council.

The council and GoGet will work together for the trial. However, the spaces will be open to all car share operators.

Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said the region had tens of thousands of people who had used car share, and it made sense to integrate it with public transport.

GoGet partnerships boss Christopher Vanneste said the agreement was the first of its kind for the business.

“Car share is a proven congestion solution, reduces emissions and frees up parking in our neighbourhoods,” he said.

“We are working closely with Council to make this a success for everyone in the community, and have always believed that allowing anyone to apply for car share bays is important for the long term adoption of car share.”
