IF YOU have been on the diet merry-go-round, lived on a liquid diet or virtually staved yourself on certain days of the week only to find all the weight has stubbornly returned — it’s time to stop.

That’s the message from obesity expert Dr Nick Fuller who has just published his second book Interval Weight Loss for Life.

The book offers tips for people who need to lose weight but have become totally confused by all the misinformation out there and depressed by their failure to keep the weight off.

“It is a practical guide that can be followed. It answers all the questions in a complete manual so they don’t have to go to a hospital clinic,” he said.

The weight-loss researcher offers scientific answers and plenty of common sense to counter-balance the $100 billion weight loss industry which he says does more harm than good.

“If you continue to lose weight then your body fights it after one to three months on the diet,” he said.

Dr Fuller has had first-hand experience of watching people go on strict diets when he worked behind the scenes on the program Honey We Are Killing The Kids. “It was concerning because these programs are for visual effect ,” he said.

The experience prompted him to return to an academic setting and help patients at the ground level.

His first book, Interval Weight Loss, described how weight loss prompts biological protections to kick in. The body defends itself by conserving energy and returning to the original “set point”.

Dr Fuller and his team at the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre discovered if smaller amounts of weight are lost followed by a weight maintenance period, the body is more likely to establish a new “set weight”.

His new book addresses ways to break bad habits and offers a whole section of easy-to-follow recipes.

It explodes some of the myths in the frequently asked question section.

For instance: Should I exercise in the morning or evening?

“Exercise when it suits you. It doesn’t matter when you do it; all that matters is that you do.” Common sense indeed.

Dr Fuller is working on his third book.
