Police were called to King St in Newtown shortly after midnight after a food delivery rider was allegedly punched and had his motor scooter stolen.
Police say the 44-year-old rider was approached by an unknown man who allegedly punched him in the chest before taking off on the scooter. The rider was not hurt.
A short time later, officers sighted the scooter on Mechanic St, Newtown, with the rider not wearing a helmet. The 28-year-old man was stopped at the intersection of Mary and Lennox streets where he returned a positive roadside breath test.
He was arrested and taken to Newtown Police Station where he returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.140.
Police checks revealed the man’s licence had been suspended.
He was charged with common assault, mid-range drink driving, taking and driving a conveyance without owner’s consent and a string of traffic offences.
He was refused bail to face Newtown Local Court on Thursday.
