NAPLAN results inner west schools: Meriden takes top spot again

The top performing primary school for NAPLAN results in Sydney’s inner west is a prominent private institution that charges fees of up to $24,600 a year.
Anglican all-girls school Meriden in Strathfield has beaten out the competition, scoring an average of 529.8 across reading writing, spelling grammar and numeracy for years 3 to 5.
Presbyterian Ladies College in Croydon finished second with an average of 520.
The Inner West Courier can also reveal that only one public school scored in the top five of educational institutions.
Balmain Public scored the third highest with an average of 518, beating out the exclusive Newington College which charges fees of up to $27,333 a year.
Newington College was the second-highest performing NAPLAN school in the inner west last year.
MLC Burwood, which was third last year, is now ninth while Burwood Public School is 24th after cracking the top 10 in 2019.
In a strong sign for inner west schools, all top three institutions excelled, scoring above the state and national average in every single category and year group.
Meriden claims the number one spot for the second year in a row, with principal Julie Greenhalgh last year stating the results came as a surprise
“Our NAPLAN results are strong because we focus on expert teaching and learning and don’t worry about NAPLAN,” Dr Greenhalgh said at the time.
Catholic and private schools again dominated the top 20, with only eight public schools making the list.
Petersham Public School, Summer Hill Public School and Balmain Public School however, were able to crack the top 10 and beat out Trinity Grammar School which finished in 18th.
