Canada Bay Council has a new mayor, with councillor Michael Megna promising “a strong focus on core services and planning” after beating fellow councillor Julia Little by two votes to replace disgraced former leader Angelo Tsirekas.

Mr Megna will officially become the council’s fifth mayor when he is rubber-stamped by NSW Governor Margaret Beazley – a process which could take a month.

The 5-3 vote at an extraordinary meeting held on Wednesday night was in the wake of last week’s dismissal and disqualification of Tsirekas from civic office by the local government minister after he was found to be corrupt in respect of his relationship with a property developer.

Tsirekas was suspended in November before then deputy mayor Joseph Cordaro took the role before a vote could be cast.

Mr Megna, who was first elected to Drummoyne Council in 1987 and served four years as deputy mayor and six years as mayor, has represented the community for over 30 years through eight terms.

Mr Megna said he was positive about the council being able to move forward and focus on community needs such as improving the river transport system.

“I am extremely proud to have been nominated by my fellow councillors to the office of mayor, pending consideration by the Governor,” Mr Megna said.

“The City of Canada Bay is a beautiful and vibrant area with a wonderful sense of community.

“I look forward to continuing the great work of this council as mayor, with a strong focus on core services and planning for a bright future for our residents, local businesses, and community organisations.”

The pending new mayor won the council election by two votes over Julia Little, who had the backing of councillors including Andrew Ferguson, who wanted to see a fresh face in the seat but acknowledges the body of work Mr Megna holds.

“I am pleased City of Canada Bay councillors have elected a new mayor, I supported councillor Julia Little for mayor for a fresh approach but she was defeated five to three in the ballot,” Mr Ferguson said.

“I acknowledge councillor Megna, who was elected mayor after more than two decades of service with council, ultimately ratepayers will have the final say for our future in the local government elections scheduled for September 2024.”

Deputy Mayor Joseph Cordaro will continue performing the mayoral functions until the appointment is ratified by the NSW Governor.
