An apprentice plumber who is alleged to have driven a gang of youths who detonated an IED outside a woman’s home has appeared in court after pleading guilty to attacking a sheesha delivery driver on a separate occasion.

Massimo Lombardo, 18, from Croydon Park, fronted Burwood Local Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to one charge of common assault.

The plumber had been drinking at a house party in North Ryde in July when he went outside and confronted a driver who was delivering Sheesha to the house, according to police facts.

He then punched the driver Muhammad Bhatti at his face with both his “left and right fists.”

“The victim pleaded for the accused to stop asking why he was hitting him,” facts state.

Lombardo was then dragged away as police were called.

When the cops arrived Lombardo had been sitting in the back seat of a car and tried to shut the door “a number of times,” according to facts.

Lombardo donned a navy suit and he was supported by his mum for sentence.

In court, his lawyer Oscar Chidiac said Lombardo had been seeing a psychologist and said he will be making a mental health application.

Lombardo is also one of nine who are before the courts for his alleged connection to the detonation of an IED (improvised explosive device) which blasted at a Canterbury home in June.

The small bomb exploded at a home in Canterbury on June 8 and left Denise Lavell with serious burns to her body.

The court previously heard Lombardo allegedly drove his co-accused to Coles to buy materials to make the IED and then back to the Canterbury home where it was allegedly placed.

The plumber was charged with “causing an explosive to explode with the intent to cause harm to a person” after he was arrested by a special police strike squad in August.

Lombardo, who is on bail, will return to court on December 2 for his explosive charges.

His mental health application hearing will take place next January.
