A man in his 50s has been stabbed to death in broad daylight in what police say was a brazen attack in the middle of a popular suburban town centre.

Inner West Police Commander Sam Crisafulli said the 55-year-old victim was standing on Marrickville Rd in Marrickville when he was approached by a 62-year-old man who allegedly stabbed him multiple times in the torso.

Emergency services were called just after 12pm following reports a man had been stabbed, with police officers locating the 55-year-old man with stab wounds to his upper body.

“Despite the best efforts of police and emergency services the man died at the scene,” Supt Crisafulli said.

“Police shortly after attended a location in Denison St, Dulwich Hill, where after a short police operation the 62-year-old man was arrested.”

The older man is currently in hospital under police guard being treated for injuries unrelated to today’s events.

Supt Crisafulli confirmed the men were known to each other but were not domestically linked.

“Both gentlemen were known to police but there are no links to organised or serious crime,” Supt Crisafulli said.

“The exact motive is still under investigation.”

Supt Crisafulli said there was no risk to the community after the police operation concluded.

“I want to take this opportunity to reassure the community that it is safe in Marrickville,” he said. “They can go about their business in a Covid-safe under what’s outlined in the public health orders.”

Not long after police were alerted to the alleged stabbing, police were seen swarming nearby streets, reportedly ramming down the door of one property and closing Marrickville Rd to all traffic.

Armed riot police responded to the incident and were seen making their way around the neighbourhood as residents were reportedly told to stay inside as police, with the help of Polair, attempt to locate the older man.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Crimestoppers.
