A raft of changes to the $142 million makeover of the Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre have been approved by the Department of Planning.
The massive expansion which was flagged in early 2019 is set to be completed later this year, bringing with it 44 new retailers and a significant amount of jobs.
However, owner UniSuper has thrown in some late changes to the project which were approved by the department last week.
The modifications include a change in the building facade, relocating car parking spaces and the introduction of a pergola.
The original plans to expand came on the back of a growing demand for food outlets at the popular centre.
Marrickville itself has been a buzz with construction activity in recent years and is one of the biggest suburbs for developer investment in Sydney.
In March, the Sydney East City Planning Panel approved a massive $129 million residential apartment project on the corner of nearby Faversham St and Victoria Rd.
That development is part of a wider $250 million Danias Timber proposal to revamp the suburb and bring almost 900 units to a flash new precinct.
The same company is also behind a $50 million arts precinct in Marrickville which was also recently approved by Inner West Council.
However, activist groups likes Save Marrickville have spent recent years fighting against high rise towers and what they say is the “overdevelopment” of the formerly quiet suburb.
The Danias Timber project received almost 100 submissions from members of the community before it was approved by the planning panel.
No submissions were made by members of the public for the latest changes to the Marrickville Metro upgrade.
