ONE Marrickville man’s bad behaviour towards his dogs has come back to bite him.
The 26-year-old was convicted at Burwood Local Court last week with multiple counts of animal cruelty and failure to provide veterinary treatment to five dogs.
They were found to have serious problems including puncture wounds, lacerations, hookworm infestations, and ear infection, heavy flee burdens and a leg injury.
One of the dogs, honey, was also pregnant at the time.
The court heard the man was seen leading his injured dog, Sasha around a park behind a bicycle, and at times, dragging her on the ground.
When a witness confronted him about his behaviour, the man reportedly said, “Dogs run on three legs, you’ve never seen a three-legged dog run?”
The witness filmed the dog limping and later that same day, saw the man riding the bicycle again, with Sasha being dragged on the ground.
An RSPCA Inspector directed him to take two of his dogs to a vet, and when he only partially complied, the two dogs were surrendered to the RSPCA.
“The RSPCA veterinarian who examined the dogs found that they each had heavy flea burdens, hookworm infestations and fly bitten ears,” a RSPCA spokesman said.
“Sasha’s right hind leg injury, which caused unnecessary pain, suffering and chronic lameness, was determined to have been caused over three weeks before her examination.”
The RSPCA received another cruelty complaint against the man, and executed a search warrant to inspect all animals at his property.
Inspectors seized two Staffordshire terriers, David and Billy, and a pregnant shar pei, Honey.
They were taken to the RSPCA’s Sydney Shelter for veterinary treatment.
While in recovery from her injuries, Honey gave birth to four puppies.
The man has been prohibited from purchasing or acquiring an animal for five years and was ordered to pay $21,339.65 in veterinary and shelter costs for the treatment of the dogs.
He has also been placed on a two year community correction order for each matter.
It means he must be of good behaviour and must complete 100 hours of community service work for each matter.
RSPCA NSW Chief Inspector Scott Meyers sick or injured animals must be seen by a vet.
“The RSPCA is grateful for the report from the member of the public who brought it to our attention and advocates the appropriate use of prohibition orders to protect animals.”
