The NSW Police watchdog is looking into an incident in Sydney’s inner west last week after officers responded to a man who fell onto train lines in Marrickville.
The Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, which oversees the conduct of the state’s police force, said it was independently monitoring the police investigation into the incident.
The watchdog has only publicly acknowledged its investigation into barely a handful of incidents this year and typically does not look into the actions of officers if the professional standards command are tasked onto the case.
The LECC has limited resources and only looks into matters if it has a suspicion of misconduct or maladministration.
In a three line statement this week it revealed it was independently looking into the investigation surrounding the incident
“The LECC is independently monitoring the investigation of the critical incident under Part 8 of the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission Act 2016 to ensure public confidence in the investigation,” it said last Wednesday.
The investigation will also be reviewed by officers from the professional standards command within the police force.
The LECC is focusing on the events surrounding a man who was injured near Marrickville train station on Wednesday morning.
“A critical incident investigation has been launched after a man was injured in Sydney’s Inner West,” NSW Police said in a statement.
“About 11.40am (Tuesday 12 October 2021), officers from Inner West Police Area Command were patrolling Marrickville Railway Station, when they noticed a man sitting on a wall.
“Police spoke to the man before he jumped off the overpass.
“The man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital in a critical but stable condition.
“A critical incident investigation team from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.”
Despite its interest, the LECC has very rarely made adverse findings against police since it was formed in 2017.
