A  FORMER real estate agent who admitted stealing mail from more than 200 people across Sydney has been given a nine-month good behaviour bond.

Jessica Gaddes, 26, used a hire car to commit some of the 34 offences, mainly throughout the inner west.

A teary and remorseful Gaddes appeared before Burwood Local Court for sentencing last Thursday after pleading guilty to the offences, committed during a four-month spree.

Judge Gary Still said that with no criminal record, good references and her commitment to stay clean, Gaddes was unlikely to reoffend.

During the month-long investigation, Burwood police officers Constable Derek Pontois and Sergeant Anthony Volpe revealed the Erskine Park resident had stolen up to 500 pieces of mail, including medical information and credit cards, from unit blocks in areas ­including Abbotsford, Drummoyne, Rockdale, Strathfield, Toongabbie and Regents Park.

The court heard she had become influenced by drugs during her time as a real estate agent at St Marys.

During one of her arrests, she admitted to officers that she “may have been under the influence of the drug ice”.

Gaddes has since enrolled in a rehab program in Balmain and has agreed to follow her treatment for up to 12 months.

Burwood police are in talks with Burwood Council to source funding to install CCTV cameras in key areas to capture the movement of offenders in and out of areas such as Rhodes.

To avoid major financial implications and identity theft, Burwood police advise:

● Contact banks and ask to pick up credit cards from your nearest branch

● Regularly empty letterboxes

● Get a strong, secure padlock

● Check bank statements for unusual transactions

● Ask your bank to send you a text for large transactions
