NO trains will operate at Marrickville railway station this weekend, as major works are carried out as part of the station upgrade.

Buses replace trains for commuters, while concrete planks and slabs for the new station concourse are installed.

During the rail shutdown weekend, electrical works including relocating high voltage poles and cabling will also be carried out.

The historic Marrickville Railway Station is undergoing a significant upgrade, which will see two new lifts, a new staircase and a new concourse, family friendly accessible toilets and bicycle parking. It is expected to be completed by mid next year.

Traffic nearby will also be affected this coming weekend, a spokesman for Transport NSW said, with Station St being closed to vehicles both Saturday and Sunday. Pedestrians can still walk to the shops and ticket office on Platform 2.

The southbound lane of Illawarra Rd, as well as the footpath, will be periodically closed. Alternative vehicle and pedestrian access will be provided and buses will operate as per normal.

Transport authorities also flagged that construction vehicles will access the rail corridor gate off Warburton St to carry out electrical cabling works and on the Saturday morning, the northern end of Riverdale Ave will be closed for electrical pole installation.

A pedestrian laneway alongside the track will also be shut.

When the upgrade is finished, travellers will see a new “kiss and ride” facility for more convenient drop offs and pick ups, a new taxi rank and more parking.
