Groovy Grandparents face 21st century challenges
ALLERGIES, mobile phones and child safety car seats are hot topics as child-minding grandparents discuss 21st century challenges.

ALLERGIES, mobile phones and child safety car seats are just some of the 21st century challenges facing child-minding grandparents.
Drummoyne-based playgroup Groovy Grandparents often exchange stories on these topics.
Long-time member Jan Glazier, who takes along her five-year-old grandson Kaspar to the meetings, said a few things had changed since having her own children, such as cutting grapes in half to avoid choking hazards.
“There’s a lot more allergies around these days and we all have very clear instructions,” she said. “We are actually a very obedient lot with things like cutting grapes in half.
“And you have to be agile to figure out the car seats!”
Another huge change the grandparents have noticed is the advent of the mobile phone — everyone is taking photographs of the kids during playgroup, whereas in the past they were rarely taken during playtime.
“The pictures are sent straight to the parents, who love it,” Mrs Glazier said.
Having “been there, done that” means you’re calmer and less fussed, she said.
“We have seen it all, so we know everyone is going to get through it all OK.”
A national survey released earlier this month showed grandparents are the most popular form of child care. Groovy Grandparents want new members to join their Wednesday morning meetings at Drummoyne Scout Hall.
Mrs Glazier said some of the grandchildren attending the group were moving into “big school” next year and spots had opened up.
“More grandparents these days are looking after their grandchildren,” she said.
“And while they can attend regular playgroups – which are great – it’s actually been really worthwhile exchanging stories with fellow grandparents.”
