A teenager with a history of robbing cars has narrowly avoided jail for his role in a brazen carjacking involving a heavily pregnant woman and her two children.

Fetaui Sulu, 19, will not spend any time behind bars for attempting to cover up the daylight robbery – where the two children were allegedly slapped – after sitting on information for 12 days before pointing himself and associates out to police in CCTV footage.

He was sentenced to a 15 month Community Corrections Order after pleading guilty to being an accessory before the act at Burwood Local Court today.

The incident began with a simple phone call in April after the heavily pregnant victim put her Mercedes AMG up for sale on Gumtree and CarSales.

The woman, who was then overdue to give birth, met with Sulu and co-accused LJ Sevea Wright outside her Greenacre home before taking the latter for a test drive.

However, when Wright jumped into the driver’s seat of the luxury car, he allegedly sped off with the victim’s two stepchildren in the back, dragging the woman along for several metres as she pleaded to save her kids.

“My kids my kids!” she was heard yelling.

The woman then fell into the middle of the road, suffering grazes to her legs, knees and abdomen.

Wright is alleged to have told police he expected $10-$15k for the robbery.

The children, aged 10 and eight, began to hold each other and cry according to court documents.

Police allege Wright then pulled over 200 metres away, slapped the children and ordered them to get out of the car, a claim he denied in his interview with detectives.

From there, he picked up Sulu and drove the vehicle to the Auburn and Lidcombe areas.

Concerned residents who had heard the woman’s cry for help had then used their own cars to block their road off before Wright allegedly mounted a roundabout to avoid the blockade.

According to court documents, Wright told police he expected to earn $10,000 to $15,000 for his role while Sulu told officers he was asked to “do a job” by Wright and was expecting $300 to $500.

An hour after the incident, police had pulled Wright over in the car with other male associates just 15 minutes away from where the Mercedes was allegedly stolen.

The pair were not arrested for another 12 days.

Magistrate Alison Viney said Sulu’s role was minor in the ordeal during his sentencing.

“The community relies on people to do the right thing and report things to the police,” she said.

Wright also pled guilty to his charge of take motor vehicle with person in it and inflict actual bodily harm, but will be sentenced at a later date.
