An elderly driver had a miraculous escape after crashing his SUV into Rookwood Cemetery.
Police were called to Hawthorne Ave, Rookwood, on Friday afternoon after reports of a single vehicle crash in the cemetery.
The man lost control of his vehicle and crashed into Rookwood General Cemetery’s Muslim Burial Ground (Muslim section 1 to 6), Rookwood Cemetary confirmed.
Helicopter shots show the SUV rolled on its side and resting on a cemetery plot.
A police spokesperson said the man was not injured in the crash but was trapped for a short time before being released.
This time was about 40 minutes according to reports.
He was treated by paramedics at the scene but his injuries are not serious.
Rookwood Cemetery have now sectioned-off the area impacted by the accident “to ensure the safety of visitors and staff”.
In a statement, Rookwood Cemetary said: “Thankfully there were no major injuries to the driver or witnesses, however a number of allotments have been damaged.”
“Over the coming days we will be identifying and contacting the families whose monuments have been affected. As a part of this process, we will assess the extent of the damage and will be doing everything we can to support the families involved,” the statement continued.
