THE Cyprus Club in Stanmore would be redeveloped into 150 to 180 apartments, a new club, a public plaza and shops under one of three options to be considered by members next month.
Club president Soteris Tsouris said the vision was to turn the 89-year-old building into an “international club”, which would be built over 1500 to 2000sq m and two levels on the corner of Stanmore Rd and Alma Ave with entrance from a new 400sq m public plaza.
“It’s very hard to survive by keeping it as an ethnic club so it’s going to be like the Hellenic Club in Canberra for all different ethnic groups to bring new people and members in,” he said.
There would be restaurants, bars and an auditorium for community events, weddings, engagements, christenings and dance classes.
The $60-$80 million redevelopment of the massive 9000sq m site would range in height from three to six storeys and be carried out as a “joint venture with a big company”.
Developers have been circling with “good offers” received from Stockland and Capital Bluestone.
Two new lanes would provide vehicle and pedestrian access between Tupper St and Alma Ave and 700sq m of land would be dedicated to widening Alma Ave.
There would be 100 parking spots for the club and 200 spots for the units—both over three levels.
Housing would also be provided in ten, three level houses at the back of the site.
Last Tuesday, Inner West Council resolved to forward the proposal, which allows maximum height limits on the site to be increased from 14m to 23m, to the planning minister for a gateway determination.
But the final decision will rest with members who will hear about the three options at an information session at the club on October 14.
Then they will make a final decision at an extraordinary meeting before Christmas.
The second option is to sell the site, which Mr Tsouris said was worth about $80 million, and move to another site close by like a bowling club or big parcel of land where they would build a brand-new club.
This option would hopefully enable them to provide fields and facilities for soccer team Stanmore Hawks, which is part of the club.
Option three would be to sell part of the land and refurbish the club.
