CCTV released of Marrickville bank robbery

Detectives have released CCTV footage after a man robbed a Marrickville bank in broad daylight yesterday. The thief remains at large after he approached a teller before stealing a bag of cash from Westpac on Marrickville Rd just before 4pm.

A man remains at large after robbing a Marrickville bank in broad daylight yesterday.

Detectives have released CCTV footage after the man approached a teller before stealing a bag of cash from Westpac on Marrickville Rd just before 4pm.

A NSW police spokesperson said the man originally asked to set up a bank account but then stole “a sum of cash” from another staff member before fleeing.

It is unknown what direction he ran in.

He was not armed and no one was injured during the incident.

An employee from Chargrill ChickenVille Marrickville, directly opposite the bank, told The Daily Telegraph it was a bizarre afternoon.

“There was woman standing at the counter with her money next to her, then this man just walked in and ran off with it,” she said.

“It was so weird, it doesn’t seem like the place for a bank robbery.”

A spokeswoman for Westpac said they were looking into the robbery.

“No customers or employees were injured during the incident, and we are offering support and counselling to our employees,” she said.

“We are working with police as they investigate the matter.”

Officers from Inner West Police Area Command established a crime scene and are investigating.

Detectives have released CCTV footage in an attempt to identify and locate the man involved as inquiries continue.

The man in the footage is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, about 180cm tall with short dark hair.

He was wearing a black t-shirt with white print, dark shorts and thongs.
