Less than 48 hours into freedom from a painstaking three-month lockdown, an inner west cafe has been bombarded with abuse by a crusading anti-vaxxer.
But the joke may be on them, after one customer responded by shouting coffees for Cafe Dzajko’s next 10 customers, inspiring others to do the same and leave tips for the new business.
A video of the unidentified man has been circulating on social media on since Monday, depicting him being irate at a barista who he described as inciting “segregation” because of current laws which only permit businesses to serve fully-vaccinated customers.
One customer awkwardly watches while waiting for his coffee as the man rants at staff, declaring he was a business owner “opening up for all because instead of being apartheid day, it would be freedom day”.
He then went on to call it “a putrid attempt to segregate” and yelled that he was “very powerful”.
The video has more than 50,000 views and has sparked a backlash against the man, with dozens of people vowing to buy a coffee at Cafe Dzajko in the wake of the incident.
Former inner west mayor Darcy Byrne is one of several who left a tip in the wake of the incident.
“That sort of disrespect is just plain wrong,” he said.
“I headed down there today to buy my lunch and leave a tip.
“They are great people who deserve our respect and support. They actually started the business during the pandemic. What could be more enterprising than that.”
