Burwood school crossing an “accident waiting to happen” for 600 students

The issue was first raised in 2013 – more than two years later, nothing has changed.

Parents are concerned a busy pedestrian crossing is an accident waiting to happen for more than 600 students at Burwood Public School.

The crossing on Conder St has never had flashing lights, though a crossing on the Railway Pde side of the school has had flashing lights for several years.

Burwood Public School P & C president Mark Burford first raised the issue with Burwood Council and the Roads and Maritime Service in 2013.

“Conder St is a significant thoroughfare which needs to be crossed for access from the Burwood CBD to the school,” Mr Burford said.

“Motorists need to be reminded of the speed limit well before reaching the school crossing, because pedestrians do not always use the school crossing as they should.”

Strathfield state Labor MP Jodi McKay supports the school community’s efforts to obtain flashing lights for the school zone.

“There have been a number of near misses in this area,” Ms McKay said.

She said the government had previously indicated it would roll out flashing lights to all schools by the end of 2017.

“We have not even been able to find out a date for a possible installation,” she said.
