In the largest program of its kind in Australia, the City of Canada Bay council will now be alerted in real-time when public bins are full and ready to be collected.
The program is pre-empting population growth according to City of Canada Bay Mayor Angelo Tsirekas.
Ninety-five litter bins around Rhodes, Concord and Cabarita Park will be installed with a sensor technology, which can monitor bin-fullness levels, temperatures and peak usage times.
The long-range data collection network, managed by technology company meshed and delivered by Smart Sensor Technologies, can be viewed by council staff on an online dashboard.
“We’re committed to being at the cutting edge when it comes to smart city technologies like our bin-sensor pilot program,” Mayor Tsirekas said.
“With our population only continuing to grow, the program will enable us to respond to increased demand and use our resources wisely, deploying bins and collection staff when and where they are needed most.”
Smart Sensor Technologies Managing Director Leon Hayes said: “We look forward to our continued partnership with the City of Canada Bay and for assisting them in maintaining an optimised, smart waste management system for many years to come.”
The pilot program will be looked at in 12 months, with the potential to increase the bin sensor program.
