Pollies, publishers, directors and doctors are the cream of the crop in the inner west, taking out some of the nation’s most prestigious titles in this year’s Australia Day Honour’s List.
Musical maestro Michael Tyack, of Rozelle, has been awarded an AM for his directorial roles in the stage performances from the likes of The Boy from Oz to Mary Poppins and a career full of gongs which includes an ARIA in 1999.
Mr Tyack began his career as an aspiring professional musician in grungy 1970s Melbourne before going on to change Australia’s performing arts scene through his involvement in major productions of Cats and Chicago.
Balmain’s own Janine Sargeant joins him on the list of honours after a life spent in dedication to the medical profession.
Her AM comes after decades working on saving lives.
From being appointed as the CEO of Australasian Association of Nuclear Medicine Specialists to working as the executive officer of the Australian Association of Consultant Physicians, Ms Sargeant has worked up a resume that puts her at the top of her field.
Bobbi Mahlab’s AM comes after years of advocacy for women.
On top of her award-winning Balmain marketing firm, the inner west publisher has dedicated a significant portion of her spare time to issues close to her.
In particular, protecting vulnerable women has occupied most of his charitable endeavours.
In 2012 she became an advisory council member for the Sydney Women’s Fund and just a year later she became a board member for Detour House’s women’s’ and girls’ refuge.
When Dr Stephen Bourke is not out on digs in Jordan, he calls the suburb of Croydon home.
Though judging by his resume, it’s doubtful he gets much down time in the inner west.
The University of Sydney academic has been awarded an AM for his work in archaeology in the Middle East nation, where he has led a number of major excavation projects.
His work is quite literally groundbreaking and has let to significant discoveries since first obtaining his PhD from University College London.
