Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre will have more shops, later trading hours and is on the cusp of introducing paid parking after redevelopment plans were approved.

AMP, which owns the centre, has permission for two levels of shops at the Edinburgh Rd site, an additional level of shops on the Victoria Rd site, and 528 more parking spaces.

While the $140 million concept plans were approved in 2012, AMP last year applied for changes.

These included allowing 12 cafes and restaurants on the Edinburgh Rd site to trade until midnight, adding a pedestrian bridge over Smidmore St, and paid parking.

The 12 cafes and restaurants trading later would face Smidmore St, and form a “main street” shopping strip, according to AMP.

These extended trading hours will be trialled for 24 months.

The state government recently approved the changes, but found council was the relevant body to decide on paid parking.

AMP has flagged allowing three hours free parking, consistent with many centres.

However, Inner West Council staff raised concerns in their submission on the changes to the plans.

They wanted to know how many spaces would be provided for workers at the centre.

Paid parking could lead workers to leave their cars in surrounding streets, the staff said.

There were nine objections from members of the public, concerned with parking, traffic, construction and trading hours.

The expanded centre will have two levels of rooftop parking at each building and 1,628 spaces.

State government officials said it would improve retail floorspace in a central location well served by public transport, and create a “walkable” main street.

The centre currently includes Woolworths, a food court and a state government service centre.

The Courier is seeking comment from centre management.
