A man awaiting trial for an alleged stabbing with intent to murder at Brighton Le Sands has been sentenced for a string of other charges which arose from the ensuing police raid on his Wentworth Point home.

Court documents show on April 6, 2020 police executed a warrant on the unit Ali Evci, 24, shared with his father Ertekin Erdogen, seizing an illegal flick knife, 45.8mg of ice secreted with scales and clip seal bags, $12,800 in cash and the key to a stolen BMW.

He was charged with drug supply, dealing in the proceeds of crime and possessing a knife at the time.

On the day of the raid, he was also charged with grievous bodily harm with intent to murder over an alleged incident in Bay Street, Brighton Le Sands on January 11 last year.

The alleged stabbing saw a young man present to the St George Hospital in a critical condition and bloody handprints on the walls.

Later on June 17 while on remand for the grievous bodily harm with intent to murder charge, officers visited his cell at Long Bay to lay additional charges of possessing the key and entering the BMW without reasonable excuse.

Evci, who has previously lived in Homebush and Beverley Hills, is awaiting trial in the Sydney District Court for the grievous bodily harm charge but on Tuesday (April 27) was sentenced for the other charges in Central Local Court.

He was represented by the father and son team, barrister Derek Drewett and his solicitor son James of DAD Legal before Magistrate Andrew George.

“So all these matters are for sentence today?” Magistrate George said.

“Yes,” said Mr Derek Drewett.

“Wound with intent to murder?” asked Magistrate George.

“Ah, no. With the exception of that,” Mr Derek Drewett clarified.

Mr Drewett applied for special circumstances for his client given his youth and the length of time he would be spending on his first time in an adult jail.

He also pointed out Evci’s mother and stepfather were supporting him in court and upon his release he had employment in the family restaurant.

Evci, who is now in Mid North Coast Correctional Centre, will remain on remand until his grievous bodily harm with intent to murder trial in November.

“After spending over 12 months in an adult jail for a 23-year-old if he lacked insight before he went in can I say he has it now,” Mr Derek Drewett told the court.

Court documents show the BMW 118d was on loan to Feng Lin from the Canterbury car dealership when it went missing.

Mr Lin had gone to the Meridian Hotel in Hurstville on February 19 last year when he discovered his keys were missing.

He returned to find the car where he’d left it on Forest Road but by the next day it was gone.

Evci was sentenced to 15 months jail for drug supply with a non-parole period of nine months.

For possessing a knife he was sentenced to three months in prison with the other charges dealt with under a Section 10 a – a conviction with no other penalty.

The jail terms were backdated to the time Evci was first placed on remand in April last year.

The grievous bodily harm with intent to murder trial is set to begin on November 15.
