Two young Thirroul men caught at the scene of a break-in, while driving around in a vehicle allegedly stolen from the same street days earlier have been refused bail.

Nathan Hall, 18, and Dylan Arfanis, 23, faced Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday, where the court heard the pair allegedly broke into a granny flat on Station Street earlier this week, stealing everything from motorcycle keys, to power tools.

In documents tendered to the court, police say they were patrolling Station Street on Tuesday afternoon when they saw Hall standing near a blue Hyundai Getz, which had allegedly been stolen from a home just a few doors down on June 16.

Police allege they also saw Arfanis leave the front yard of a nearby house and get into the driver’s seat Hyundai, while Hall left the scene.

Police stopped Arfanis and search him.

Hidden in his pockets, police allegedly found the keys to Triumph motorcycle, a thumb drive, two phones as well as a set of house keys linked to the June 16 break-in. Police also reported noticing two “thick gold chains” around his neck.

Police arrested Hall a short time later in a nearby carpark, after he allegedly took off on a push bike.

In the documents, police allege they found a set of car keys, which they say are linked to a Ford Everest owned by the man who lived in the granny flat.

Police also searched the stolen Hyundai Getz, allegedly finding several items belonging to the same man, who is a firefighter, including power tools, his firefighting cufflinks and awards, and a cheque book.

Both Arfanis and Hall were taken back to Wollongong Police Station where they were charged with aggravated break and enter and having suspected stolen goods in their custody.

After spending the night on remand in custody, the pair faced Wollongong Local Court, where Magistrate Jillian Kiely refused to release either of them, noting they were both already on conditional bail for similar offences and would likely face custodial sentences if found guilty.

The matter will return to court in two weeks.
