After a long, dry two months, pubs across the Illawarra and south coast are finally opening their doors.
The NSW Government announced pubs, clubs, and restaurants would be able to seat 50 people from June 1 on May 22, a move that’s boosted morale not just in the clubs sector, but for people desperate for a schooner or two with a couple of mates.
At 11am on Monday, the doors to Wollongong’s Steelers Club will swing open, with up 100 people able to eat, drink, or game at the premises at any one time.
After making the reopening announcement last week, general manager Sharon Arrow said the response from members had been overwhelming.
“Everyone was so excited, as are we,” she said.
“I think the community is really ready to start going out with a couple of friends again, and just getting back to a bit of normality.”
Ms Arrow said the reopening of the club had also been met by several cheers from staff, who’ve been off work for the past eight weeks.
“They are keen to get back into the club, I think we’ve all had enough of being at home,” she said.
“It’s a sense of satisfaction we haven’t had in a long time”.
With COVID-safe cleaning measures to be ramped up, patrons will also be asked to sign in and out to ensure all contacts are traced in case of a potential outbreak.
Diners, drinkers and gamers will all be treated to table service at the club, in an effort to bring physical contact down.
The club has slightly reduced trading hours from 9am-6am to 11am-6am, however Ms Arrow said that could change depending on how many people visit the club.
“Obviously we don’t want to have to turn people away but I think that’s just the new normal we may have to face,” she said.
“In any case we are so looking forward to seeing some familiar faces back at the Steelers.”
