A Warrawong woman has been denied bail in Wollongong Local Court after being charged with the stabbing of an elderly man in Warrawong on Tuesday night.

Kalisha Buchanan, 31, has been charged with wounding with intention to cause grievous bodily harm and reckless wounding following an altercation at a unit in Todd St, Warrawong.

Emergency services arrived at the unit shortly after 9.30pm to find a “blood-splattered” scene where 69-year-old Charles Bonanno was bleeding from two wounds to his torso.

Police allege Ms Buchanan was seen fleeing the address before police arrived, but was soon apprehended nearby by officers from Lake Illawarra Command.

Ms Buchanan was found with blood on her and a split lip which Legal Aid said was a result of Mr Bonanno punching her in the face during the dispute, court documents state.

Ms Buchanan refused to speak with Aboriginal Legal Services, before telling police, “I stabbed the c*** because he raped my sister”, according to the documents.

Police allege the initial verbal altercation started when Ms Buchanan demanded money and drugs from the alleged victim, when she allegedly picked up a knife and stabbed Mr Bonanno twice in the chest and abdomen.

A crime scene was established while Mr Bonanno was airlifted to St George Hospital where he remains in a serious condition after undergoing surgery.

Ms Buchanan has been in the region since moving from Ballina in 2018, however, she has struggled to maintain permanent accommodation, the court heard.

She was in a relationship with Mr Bonanno and at times resided at his Todd St unit.

The court heard Ms Buchanan had been on bail in relation to six offences in the previous five months including assaulting a police officer and being in possession of a knife.

Registrar Tina McKenna formally refused bail and the matter was adjourned to January 10.
