An Illawarra teenager has been disqualified from driving for one year, after he was nabbed driving almost 100km over the legal limit on a notorious stretch of road in heavy traffic.
Levi De Maagd, 18, faced Wollongong Local Court for sentencing on Tuesday, after he was caught speeding down the M1 Princes Motorway at Figtree at maximum speeds of 195km per hour on July 31.
According to court documents, De Maagd was caught reaching the outrageous speeds in a signposted 90 zone, in the exact same spot where two people lost their lives in horrific, firey crash just weeks prior.
At the time of the incident, about 6.55am, on July 31, court documents detailed police watched De Maagd’s speed “increasing rapidly” clocking him driving at 195km for three seconds, before he reduced his speed 181km/h over the period of the check.
Police activated all warning signs and tried to catch up with the vehicle. After De Maagd pulled over, police asked him for his license, discovering he was a P1 Provisional driver.
As a result of the dangerous speeds, the teen was charged with drive recklessly, furiously or speed in a manner dangerous.
He subsequently pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced by Magistrate Susan McGowan on Tuesday.
Magistrate McGowan said De Maagd was lucky he didn’t seriously injure himself or someone else, noting the M1 was “notorious” for crashes and fatalities.
“The message has to get out and sadly it’s not,” she said. “It’s notorious, if anyone is surprised police wait at the bottom [of Mt Ousley], they shouldn’t be.”
As a result, De Maagd was placed on a 12 month community corrections order and disqualified from driving for 12 months. He was also fined $500.
