Steven James Woods charged over possession of child abuse material

An investigation into an alleged drug supply ring has lead to a man being charged over the alleged possession of child abuse material.

An investigation into an alleged drug supply ring operating in the Lake Illawarra region has lead to man being charged over the alleged possession of child abuse material.

Barrack Heights man Steven James Woods, was charged with one count of possess child abuse material in January, while in custody at Silverwater Jail.

The 27-year-old’s case was mentioned at Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday, where his defence lawyer told the court the new charge was served on his client while he was in custody, and that it had caused him “significant distress and embarrassment”.

Woods, along with six other people, were charged with drug and firearm offences last year, after detectives from Strike Force Gangele lifted the lid on an alleged drug syndicate while investigating the circumstances around 33-year-old Nathan Costello’s death.

Mr Costello was shot at Carr Parade at Unanderra in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2018, in what police at the time said was a “targeted attack”.

Woods’ charges related to the alleged supply of 4kgs of methamphetamine between April 2018 and February 2019.

He also faces gun, traffic offences and pervert the course of justice offences.

It is not suggested Woods, or any of his co-accused, were involved in the death of Nathan Costello.

On January 14 police laid an additional charge of possessing child abuse material on Woods, after several photos of an underage girl were allegedly uncovered on his phone, which had been seized as part of the drug supply investigation.

Woods’ lawyer did not apply for bail on his client’s behalf on Wednesday, and the matter was adjourned to February 26.
