The hellish Currowan blaze is still ripping through the South Coast, having devoured almost 80,000 hectares of bushland and several properties since it ignited two weeks ago.

The fire reached terrifying new levels last Thursday, when it ravaged the small coastal hamlet of Bawley Point, destroying the picturesque landscape and at least one home within just 90 minutes.

While most of the residents living in Bawley Point had evacuated earlier in the week, others chose to stay behind to fight against the blaze.

Firefighters worked tirelessly, as they fought off huge walls of flames to protect homes, animals and paddocks in Bawley Point, as well as Termeil and Lake Tabourie further north.

Bawley Point RFS captain Dave Sharpe had an extremely close call that morning, arriving with three crews to his Willinga Drive home, where fire was burning round every inch of the property.

With his colleagues, they managed to fight off the fire, saving his family home.

Mr Sharpe was overcome with emotion as the blaze died down, throwing his arms around the dedicated firefighters who have done so much for the South Coast community.

Whether waiting at evacuation centres or by their front doors, the whole community had nothing but thanks and praise for the more than 300 firefighters working to defend the close-knit community.

While fire activity has subsided, Tuesday is set to be another challenging day, with high temperatures and severe fire danger forecast for the region.

Currowan Fire incident controller Ken Hall said now that the warning level has dropped to advice level, crews are hoping to open the Princes Highway between Ulladulla and Batemans Bay, after it was closed last Sunday afternoon.
