Police have retrieved human remains, believed to be those of missing fisherman Van Hai Tran, after a recreational diver located him underwater this afternoon.
About 1.30pm on Saturday, police were notified after a recreational diver located what he believed to be a person underwater near Red Point at Port Kembla.
Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District and Marine Area Command attended the location before Police Divers commenced a search.
They located the remains, which are believed to be those of the 66-year-old rock fisherman, who was reported missing after failing to return home from Port Kembla two weeks ago.
Mr Tran was an avid fisherman and came down to Port Kembla regularly to fish off the rocks, often for a couple of days at a time.
His worried family contacted police after he did not return home to Bankstown after leaving for the coast on Saturday, August 24.
Police commenced a wide scale search in waters off Port Kembla between Bellambi and Bass Points after he was reported missing, finding items of his clothing about two miles out to sea, northeast of Hill 60.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
