An East Corrimal man has copped a hefty fine and a gobful from a magistrate for possessing an item “we all used to have”.

Radislav Misimovic hobbled into Wollongong Local Court with the aid of a crutch on Thursday to learn his fate for breaching a prohibited weapon prohibition order.

The gun permitless 45-year-old was caught with an unsecured semiautomatic rifle in his bedroom and a small black pistol in August, 2020.

In October, 2020, Misimovic was placed on a two-year community corrections order as well as the weapon prohibition order for the same length of time for not keeping a firearm safely and two counts of possessing a prohibited weapon without a permit.

When officers attended Misimovic’s East Corrimal address for a compliance check in June this year, however, they found he had another prohibited weapon - a slingshot.

“It’s mine, I just had it hanging there,” Misimovic told the officers.

They also found a karambit knife, but after further inquiries they determined it wasn‘t a further breach.

In court on Thursday, Misimovic, who is recovering from a knee injury, interrupted Magistrate Claire Girotto multiple times to try and explain himself.

“He’s on a bond for having a prohibited weapon and he’s got a prohibited weapon,” Ms Girotto said.

“What’s wrong with you sir?”

The court heard Misimovic hadn’t been complying with the reporting conditions of the CCO with the man passing off the phone calls from community corrections to his partner, who isn‘t accused of any wrongdoing.

“Can’t you talk because of your knee?” the magistrate said.

“Is your tongue broken? It’s not broken today.”

“I’m minded to sling him with a fine. We all had slingshots when we were younger, but not these days.”

Misimovic was convicted and fined $300 for possessing the slingshot and $250 for the three breaches with the total penalty of $1050.
