McDonalds, Unanderra: Plans for more golden arches along busy Princes Highway

Is it a golden arches overload? A new McDonalds restaurant is being planned for the Illawarra - less than 3km from an existing Maccas.

Fast food giant McDonald’s has lodged plans to build another Illawarra outlet, this time at Unanderra.

The freestanding fast food outlet is proposed for an empty block of land on the Princes Highway and will include a McCafe and drive-through operations.

The franchise would be a 24-hour outlet with a dual line drive-through, dining area for 54 people and carpark accommodating 27 car spaces.

The new McDonalds, planned for 45-49 Princes Highway, would be less than 3km from the Figtree outfit, also located on the Princes Highway.

According to the development application lodged with Wollongong Council, the proposal seeks full operations 24/7, including drive-through and front counter operations. There would be an average of 12 staff on site during daytime hours at any given time and three staff on site during the night.

According to the application, sales data from a comparative store within the Wollongong LGA demonstrates that approximately 64 per cent of sales occur through the drive-through, therefore the proposed Unanderra restaurant would be ‘predominantly’ take away rather than eat in.

The application also said the proposed operation at Unanderra would “promote business along a main road,” as well as provide for “an additional mix of direct and indirect employment opportunities in an accessible location”.

The proposal will be on public exhibition until May 8.
