A NSW woman involved in one of the state’s most evil murders has landed herself back in the hands of the law, after stealing trays of meat and clothes from a Warrawong shopping centre to pay for drugs.
Belinda Van Krevel, who became a household name in 2001 when she was jailed for getting her then-boyfriend Keith Schreiber to kill her father Jack Van Krevel with a tomahawk, appeared in Port Kembla Local Court on Wednesday, after two stealing incidents at Warrawong Plaza in September and October.
Dubbed Belinda “Van Evil”, the 39-year-old was charged with shoplifting on September 4, after stealing $200 worth of meat from Aldi’s Warrawong store.
Van Krevel, who was with a man at the time, picked up several trays of meat and stuffed them into a backpack and reusable shopping bag before fleeing the store.
Staff at Aldi notified centre security who then called police. Two days later, Van Krevel was arrested at her Port Kembla home where she admitted to stealing the goods.
Despite being slapped with a six-month ban from Warrawong Plaza on October 1, court documents reveal Van Krevel returned three days later, again with a reusable shopping bag.
Instead of heading to Aldi, the 39-year-old entered TK Maxx, where she stuffed several items of clothing into her bag.
As she went to leave the store, Van Krevel squeezed between the scanner and glass door, to prevent the security buzzers from activating. But, the incident was captured on CCTV, and police were again notified about Van Krevel’s theft. Officers visited her Port Kembla home for the second time in less than a month on October 9, where she admitted to selling the clothes to buy drugs.
Having been jailed for stealing a woman’s handbag in 2017, Magistrate Roger Clisdell on Wednesday asked Van Krevel why she thought she “was entitled to other people’s property”, prompting her to admit she’d done the “wrong thing”.
“Oh I know it was wrong,” she said. “I acknowledge that.”
The 39-year old pleaded guilty to two charges of shoplifting and one charge of entering an enclosed premises, before Magistrate Clisdell placed her on a 12-month community corrections order, and ordered she pay $200 in compensation for the stolen meat and a $200 fine.
“Your last shoplifting incident was in 2017,” Magistrate Clisdell said.
“If you keep stealing you will be locked back up again.”
Van Krevel’s brother Mark Valera, a friend of her former boyfriend Mr Schreiber, is serving life in jail for the brutal murders of two men, David O’Hearn and Wollongong Mayor Frank Arkell in 1998.
Both killings were described as extremely brutal, with a tie pin being stuck in Arkell’s eye while O’Hearn was decapitated and his body mutilated.
After spending six years in jail over soliciting her father’s death, Van Krevel’s relationship with the law remained a rocky one. In 2010 she was arrested over an assault and theft, and in 2013 again returned to prison after stabbing her lover several times at a Rockdale apartment.
