Northcliffe Drive, Warrawong: Shaun Primmer charged after alleged police pursuit

More than 10 police officers surrounded the car which lead them on a high-speed pursuit through quiet suburban streets in the Illawarra. The driver’s identity can now be revealed.

An Illawarra man accused of leading police on a dramatic car chase which only ended when his car ran out of fuel in the middle of a major road has been charged.

Shaun Primmer was arrested in the middle of Warrawong’s busy Northcliffe Drive on Tuesday morning, after he allegedly initiated a dangerous police chase from Mangerton to the Lake Illawarra area.

It will be alleged in court that police from the Southern Region Enforcement Squad arrived at on Myuna Way in Mangerton around 10.40am on August 18, in relation to several outstanding warrants.

When they spotted Primmer in his vehicle, they attempted to stop him, however it’s alleged he rammed his car into a police vehicle before taking off, initiating a chase.

It will be alleged Primmer lead police from the Illawarra along the Princes Highway reaching speeds of 150km per hour.

Due to safety concerns, the alleged pursuit was terminated a short time later.

Polair were called in to assist police, and allegedly located Primmer at Warrawong, where his car had ran out of fuel.

Police subsequently surrounded the vehicle and arrested Primmer, allegedly finding a taser and a quantity of meth in his vehicle.

A witness told the Illawarra Star the incident was “quite scary” and that several police surrounded the car when it stopped.

“I’d say about 10 of them (police) just ran toward him,” she said.

“Pretty luck no one was hurt really, it’s a busy road along here.”

Primmer was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station after his arrest and charged with the outstanding warrants, police pursuit, driving while disqualified, possessing a prohibited drug, and possessing a prohibited weapon.

He will face Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday.
