The driver allegedly behind the wheel of a stolen car during a wild police chase in the Illawarra last week has been refused bail.
Matthew Jake Bill was arrested on Friday and charged with 14 offences before being denied bail in Wollongong Local Court on Monday.
The charges include two counts of being involved in a dangerous police pursuit, two counts of driving recklessly and driving while disqualified.
The court heard the Warilla also has outstanding warrants for domestic violence, traffic and larceny offences.
According to police, about 8.30am on Wednesday, July 31, officers attempted to stop the black Volkswagen Golf on Shellharbour Rd at Shellharbour.
When the vehicle failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated, however, it was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.
About 8.55am, police located the vehicle abandoned in an underground carpark on Cowper St, Warrawong, where it has been seized for forensic examination.
The vehicle was allegedly stolen from a carpark in Mascot a week prior.
After extensive inquiries police arrested Bill and a 20-year-old woman at a business on Northcliffe Drive at Kembla Grange.
Footage of the incident circulating online showed the Volkswagen reversing away from two police cars at an intersection.
The vehicle then performs a sharp turn and accelerates back towards the officers, speeding past them as they scramble to give chase.
A person in the car that captured the footage can be heard exclaiming, “Oh my god, oh my god, it’s backing up”.
“They just drove into that car there, oh my god.”
The 20-year-old woman who was allegedly in the passenger seat was charged with being driven in a stolen car. She was granted police bail and will face court on Tuesday.
