A 31-year-old man police allege was involved in a botched robbery in Mangerton on Monday died on Wednesday evening after being rushed sustaining puncture wounds to his bicep which caused massive blood loss.

Morgan Brown, who was not formally charged before he was confirmed deceased on Wednesday, was described by police as the accomplice of Denny Williams in an alleged armed robbery at a unit in Mangerton, near Wollongong, on Monday afternoon.

Williams, 28, faced Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday after being charged with armed robbery and was granted strict bail where he will be under house arrest at his family’s home in Sydney’s Baulkham Hills.

Allan Lawrence, 29, also faced court on Wednesday where he did not apply for bail after being charged with wounding a person with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and affray.

Police confirmed on Friday Lawrence’s charges have been upgraded to murder.

A third man – Jamie Michael Webb – fronted court on Friday in relation to the violent incident with the tatted-up 37-year-old charged with wounding a person with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, affray and armed robbery.

The court documents tendered during the bail applications of Williams and Webb detail the alleged incidents which led up to Brown sustaining fatal injuries.

Denny Williams and Jamie Webb were both granted bail in Wollongong Local Court.

Police allege Williams was armed with a screwdriver and Brown with a knife when they knocked on a unit’s door on Johanson Cres, Mangerton, and demanded money.

The two men made off with a handbag and a container full of coins before exiting the block and running in opposite directions.

The documents state the woman who owned the handbag – who was buying ice cream at the time of the alleged robbery – saw Williams running on Payne St and yelled “He robbed us” before tackling him to the ground.

It’s alleged Webb, who lived on Myuna Wy nearby, came to the woman’s aid and struck Williams with a wooden implement causing a dislocated shoulder and facial cuts.

Police allege Lawrence tackled Brown a short distance away with CCTV allegedly depicting Webb joining the melee and striking Brown with the wooden object.

It’s alleged Webb wrestled a satchel from Brown before returning to his unit where he yelled “I stabbed him”.

Detectives spoke to Williams while he was in hospital where he allegedly told them “It was my idea to go there and get on and then it just turned to s**t”.

Williams was released from hospital about 8.30pm on Monday and was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged.

Police arrested Webb on Thursday morning after finding him hiding in his bathroom with officers also locating the Brown’s satchel.

Webb allegedly admitted to assaulting Williams and being involved in a scuffle with Brown, however, he claimed Brown had been stabbed prior to his involvement and said he could not recall if he had struck him.

Webb was granted bail with similar conditions to Williams which included a $1000 surety.

The matters were adjourned until June, with no pleas entered.
