Helensburgh mine: Man suffers suspected neck injuries

A 39-year-old man has been flown to hospital to St George Hospital after he was injured at Peabody’s Metropolitan Mine.

A Helensburgh miner has been flown to hospital after he was sucked against an industrial exhaust fan while underground.

Emergency services were called to Helensburgh’s Metropolitan Mine, run by Peabody, just after 3pm, following reports a 39-year-old man had suffered neck injuries.

Crews arrived at the Parkes Street mine shortly after, however it took almost 30 minutes to bring the man back to the surface of the mine.

It’s understood he was working on securing a tube to the extraction fan when he was sucked into the tube and knocked unconscious.

It; s understood he lost consciousness for at least a minute, before he came to.

As a result of the accident, he suffered lacerations to his neck and a suspected neck injury.

An ambulance chopper was called to the nearby Rex Jackson Oval and the man was flown to St George Hospital.

It’s understood a rick assessment will now be conducted by the mne.
