A man has been charged after a terrifying daytime shooting in a quiet Horsley street.

Police were called to Denham Drive address around 10.30am on Friday, after gunshots and a woman’s screams were reported by worried neighbours.

Lake Illawarra Police Inspector Paul Allman confirmed a 33-year-old man had been taken into custody following the shooting, which allegedly occurred inside a home where the man was living with a woman and children.

The woman and children were home at the time, and neighbours reported hearing “frightened screams” before police arrived.

Inspector Allman confirmed that fortunately, no one had been injured, in what could have been a tragic situation.

Inspector Allman confirmed police had established a strike force to investigate the incident.

Most concerning about the shooting, was the location, with a primary school less than 100 metres from the scene of the crime.

“…We’ve been lucky at this occasion that no innocent members of the public have been injured,” Inspector Allman said.

“It’s very concerning, quite a dangerous situation.”

A nearby resident said she never thought something like this could happen on what’s usually a quiet street.

“There’s been a few incidents with these people, that has been a concern,” she said.

“It’s quite concerning to think this nice little street has just been shot up, you hear about it happening in other areas but you don’t expect it to happen in your own yard.”

The man has been charged with acquire/possess/use firearm — subject to prohibition order, discharge firearm intend cause grievous bodily harm, conceal serious indictable offence of other, and recklessly deal with proceeds of crime.

He has been refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Saturday.

Detectives have established Strike Force Pestell to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
