A truck driver has died after losing control of his vehicle on one of the Illawarra’s most notorious stretches of road on Monday morning.
The driver was travelling southbound on Bulli Pass shortly before 11am when the incident occurred on the hairpin bend near the top of the pass.
The truck missed an emergency safety ramp when it crashed through a guardrail and careered down an embankment.
NSW Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics attended but the man died at the scene.
The man is yet to be formally identified.
Traffic and Highway Patrol offiers are investigating the circumstances around the crash.
Anyone with dashcam footage or information is urged to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
The Princes Highway remains closed in both directions between the M1 Princes Motorway and Lawrence Hargrave Drive.
A Facebook post by Live Traffic NSW stated: “Due to the nature of the crash, there is no forecast as to when the highway will reopen. Avoid the area and follow the directions of emergency services and traffic crews on site.”
Monday’s incident adds to a long list on the troubled stretch of road which saw a fatal two-vehicle collision in February involving a truck and an SUV towards the bottom of the pass.
In 2019, a truck burst into flames after losing control heading down Bulli Pass before hitting a car, the lane divider and multiple power poles.
