Long-serving Wollongong City Councillor Vicky King has suddenly passed away after collapsing after a community meeting last night.
Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery announced Ms King’s passing on Wednesday, after she collapsed following a Neighbourhood Forum 7 (Berkeley) community meeting at the Yacht Club in Lake Heights.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband Charlie, their children and grandchildren at this difficult time,” he said.
“Her passing is a sad loss for our community, and the council.”
Ms King, who was in her 60s, served and advocated for her community for 19 years as a Labor councillor. She joined council in 1987 and remained a councillor until 2004. After a 13 year break, she was re-elected to council in September 2017.
Her fellow Labor councillors Tania Brown, David Brown, Janice Kershaw, Jennelle Rimmer and Ann Martin described her as a “passionate woman” who would be greatly missed.
“She was a mentor to young women, especially encouraging them to participate in
local government through the Australian Local Government Women’s Association,
serving as a former President,” they said.
“Her community thanks her for her service, her passion and commitment to social
justice. She will be missed.”
Outside of her role on council, Cr King was an accountant for 42 years and was also a former Housing Trust chairman.
