The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A Thirroul man who blew more than five times over the legal limit while on bail orders restricting him from being intoxicated in a public place and from entering a licensed premises was sentenced in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday.

Karl Andrew Sattlecker could “barely speak” when he was busted in the early hours of Wednesday, April 13 driving his blue Subaru Forester.

Police saw Sattlecker driving out of the Corrimal Hotel car park without his headlights on before cruising for 100m down the wrong side of the road.

Police followed Sattlecker onto Memorial Dr before pulling him over on Bellambi Ln for a breath test with documents tendered to the court stating he was “struggling to speak and was slow to respond to questions”.

Sattlecker told police he had been drinking at the Cabbage Patch Hotel – a watering hole nearly 3km from the Corrimal Hotel.

Police took Sattlecker to Wollongong Command after he failed to submit to a breath test before returning a reading of 0.275 at the station.

Sattlecker’s license was already suspended due to accumulating too many demerit points and when police suspended his license again, he refused to sign the acknowledgment.

This boozed-up incident occurred only four months after a drunken confrontation with police outside Thirroul’s Beaches hotel.

Police were conducting a patrol of the area at around 12.20am on Saturday, January 22 when Sattlecker screamed “I f****** hate you c****” at them.

When police asked Sattlecker what his issue was, he yelled “What, what are you talking about” and as police began to drive away he hurled another load of abuse “I f****** hate you cops” – the tirade occurring in front of 10 bystanders.

Police turned around and tried to get Sattlecker’s identification, but he said he didn’t have it and continued his abusive behaviour yelling at one of the officers “You are a c***, f*** off”.

Sattlecker was put in the rear of the paddy wagon and taken to his nearby Redman Ave address where the verbal tirade continued in his front yard with a check drill to his chest leaving him uninjured on the ground.

Sattlecker began filming the police on his phone while they returned to their car to leave, but then he started banging on the windows which led police to finally place him under arrest.

The 33-year-old faced Wollongong Local Court via video link where Magistrate Gabriel Fleming considered his charges of driving with a high range drink driving, failing to submit a breath test and offensive behaviour, offensive language and resisting arrest.

“It’s absolutely shocking,” the magistrate said in relation to the drink driving charge.

“If you had hit someone you would be in custody for a very long time.

“You were so intoxicated you could barely speak – you couldn’t do anything more complicated than that.”

Magistrate Fleming also scolded Sattlecker’s awful behaviour on the late January night.

“You couldn’t have done anymore that day other than say ‘please come up and arrest me’,” she said.

“Police aren’t there to have a good time, they’re there to do a job. The public should feel safe without you swearing and making things difficult.”

Sattlecker was sentenced to a 12-month intensive corrections order during which he will need to attend drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

He is also disqualified from driving for eight months (from April 13), after which point he will require the use of an interlock device for 18 months.
