An Illawarra man has admitted dealing liquid ecstasy and methamphetamine after police searched through more than 30,000 calls and texts during a major drug sting.
Jason Amoroso pleaded guilty to two counts of supplying a prohibited drug on an ongoing basis at Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday, after police pounced on him at a local hotel in 2020.
Amoroso was busted at a hotel room at North Wollongong’s Novotel on August 7 by officers from Strike Force Ables. The strike force had been investigating Amoroso since April of that year, over the supply of GBL and methamphetamine.
In an agreed set of facts tendered to the court on Wednesday, it was revealed between April 23 and July 7, Amoroso supplied GBL and meth on at least 60 separate occasions, once facilitating a drug deal at his worksite, telling a customer to “be discreet” so his boss didn’t notice.
Documents state police became aware of the extent of Amoroso’s dealing after tapping his phone, sifting through almost 30,000 phone calls and text messages.
Texts revealed Amoroso used codenames like “drinks” and “food” to refer to GBL, and that Amoroso would charge $5 per millilitre of the drug, sometimes dealing multiple times a day.
While investigating Amoroso, police also charged his alleged associate Kelly Dent, who was allegely busted picking up the two litres of GBL for him from a Sydney supplier.
In the documents, police allege on July 16 Amoroso gave Ms Dent enough money to pick up the GBL haul from Sydney.
However, that afternoon police stopped her vehicle at Maddens Plains, where they conducted a search. Allegedly hidden in the boot was a number of bottles containing a clear liquid.
When asked what it was, Ms Dent allegedly told police it was water, and that she was keeping it there in case her car overheated. Police seized the liquid however, and left Ms Dent at Maddens Plains.
Police will allege she immediately called Amoroso, saying “I’m going to jail Jas”.
“They’ve just taken every water bottle from the boot. I said they’re water. They have to test it. I’m going to jail …”.
After tests allegedly revealed the liquid was GBL, she was charged with supply prohibited drug (commercial quantity) and two counts of possess prohibited drug and is yet to enter pleas.
Amoroso, who remains in custody on remand, will be sentenced in the NSW District Court at a later date.
