A 20-year-old man who threatened Coles employees with an axe earlier this month will remain behind bars after being sentenced in Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday.
Magistrate Christopher McRobert sentenced Jamain Russell to 18 months jail for three charges of stalk/intimidate intent, fear physical harm and being in custody of an offensive implement in a public place stemming back to Monday, April 4.
The confronting event occurred just before 10am when Russell walked into Coles Berkeley and yelled at his cousin to “hurry up” while he was being served.
The female Coles worker continued to serve Russell’s cousin when he shouted “What the f*** do you want b****, f*** you c***”, all while the worker’s female colleague was standing at the nearby service desk.
A third Coles employee, a male, walked to the front of the store upon hearing the commotion – he recognised Russell who said “I know this c***, what’s this c*** going to do. I f***** with him at Shellharbour, he’s a f****** dog”.
The male Coles employee told Russell to “Just get out” and he replied “F*** you dog”.
Russell left the store and went to his Nissan SUV where he pulled out a metre-long axe before returning to intimidate the three staff members.
Russell called one of the female workers a “c***” and a “s***” and as the male, fearing for his safety, fled to the back of the store, Russell yelled “I’m coming to get you c***”.
One of the female workers hid behind a fridge before running to the back of the store.
She returned to the front of the store once the yelling had stopped to find Russell’s cousin at the service desk where he told her he was his cousin and apologised for his actions.
Police were able to quickly identify Russell and confronted him at his Murrah Cl residence in Flinders a short time later where he was in possession of the axe.
When interviewed, Russell said the Coles worker who had been serving his cousin was “rude” to him which provoked his unsettling reaction.
Russell will be eligible for parole in October.
