A young man who subjected a family near Wollongong to a terrifying home invasion in 2018 which involved a mother pleading with him “don’t hurt my children” as he robbed her at knifepoint has been sent to prison.
Isiah Campbell, 20, formerly from Minto, was sentenced in the NSW District Court on Friday almost two years after the shocking incident which happened in December 2018 at Coledale north of Wollongong.
Campbell also committed another serious offence in November 2019 while on bail for the home invasion, the court heard.
On that occasion, he was caught on CCTV footage breaking into Bondi Icebergs Club and rummaging through property before being confronted by two brave cleaners who fought him off. He also robbed and assaulted a man outside the club.
Judge Stephen Norrish sentenced him for both matters on Friday to a term of imprisonment of seven years and three months with a non-parole period of four years and three months.
He will be eligible for release in October 2023 taking into account time already served in prison.
The court heard Campbell broke into a family home on Squires Cres in Coledale during the early hours of December 19, 2018.
He remained inside for about 20 minutes during which time the mother, sleeping next to her partner, woke to find him inside their bedroom holding a knife.
He threatened the couple if they did not comply there would be consequences, the court heard.
“Don’t hurt my children,” the mum pleaded during the ordeal.
The court heard he said: “Just do what you are told. I am not going to hurt you. Just do what you are told.”
The couple’s two children, an adult daughter and 9-year-old foster daughter, were in another room and the older daughter called police.
Police arrived and Campbell fled without his shoes.
The court heard police had seen him following the mother through the house armed with the knife before he fled.
He robbed the parents of a watch, two mobile phones and money but was found nearby by police who arrested him and retrieved the items.
Remarkably, no-one was injured in the home invasion.
He was granted bail in April 2019 – four months later – and committed another serious offence in Bondi in November 2019.
Campbell was wanted at the time for breaching his bail conditions.
In that incident, Campbell broke into Bondi Icebergs Club during the early hours of November 27 last year alongside another unidentified man, the agreed facts stated.
The attempted theft at Bondi Icebergs turned violent when two contracted cleaners spotted Campbell inside the club.
The agreed facts stated Campbell ran toward one of the cleaners and punched him in the face before a wild brawl broke out as the male cleaners tried to defend themselves and fight him off.
The fight caught on CCTV footage, and shown in court, showed chairs and poles being used and multiple punches being thrown.
Campbell eventually ran off and robbed another man outside the club of a phone and backpack.
The agreed facts stated Campbell punched and threatened the man outside stating “if you tell anyone about this I’m going to hunt you down, kill your wife, your daughter and you”.
Campbell left behind a mask and cap which matched his DNA and led to police charging him.
Police arrested him in December last year.
Campbell told the court earlier this month that he had lost his accommodation in Minto while out on bail in 2019 and was basically homeless.
“I just started taking a lot of drugs, methamphetamines, and was homeless for a bit and was just staying at people’s houses and started committing crimes to feed myself and give myself clothes and (buy drugs) as well.”
He was sentenced on Friday for four charges which he previously pleaded guilty to. They included aggravated enter dwelling in company with intent to steal and robbery.
