An Illawarra woman has been refused bail after she allegedly beat another woman with a hammer and a salt lamp while demanding she hand over $50,000 during a three-hour attack.

Amanda Matavesi, 45, faced Wollongong Local Court on Friday, charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, choke with intent, armed with intent and detain for advantage.

Magistrate Chris McRobert denied the women’s application for bail, noting the serious nature of the alleged attack, which left a 42-year-old woman bloodied, bruised and at one stage, unconscious.

In documents tendered to the court, police allege the attack began around 10pm on Thursday evening, after Matavesi attended another woman’s Woonona home.

Matavesi, who allegedly told police she’d had a bottle of port before arriving at the woman’s home, became aggressive toward her friend, allegedly demanding she transfer her $50,000 immediately.

When the woman refused, police will allege Matavesi started attacking the woman, punching and kicking her in the face and legs. She then went to the woman’s kitchen cupboard, where she allegedly found some sticky tape, threw it at the woman and said “I don’t want to hear your voice again”.

It will be alleged Matavesi then approached the alleged victim, and started wrapping the tape around her throat, telling her “I’m going to kill you tonight, you’re going to sign all your money over to me.”

After continuing to abuse the woman, Matavesi allegedly took hold of a hammer and hit the woman in the leg, causing her “immediate pain”.

The alleged attack continued for several hours, with Matavesi later using a lamp to assault the woman.

After picking the lamp up from the table, police will allege Matavesi dropped it on her friend’s head, causing “a large amount of blood” to flow from the wound and knocking her unconscious.

Court documents allege Matavesi continued to demand the $50,000, threatening to kill the alleged victim if she didn’t hand it over.

Police were called by neighbours and attended the unit, where they allegedly noticed the woman was covered in cuts and bruises.

Matavesi was arrested at the scene and taken into custody. Despite Matavesi’s defence lawyer noting her client would stay away from the victim and report to police twice daily, Magistrate McRobert refused the bail application.

She is yet to enter any pleas to the charges and will return to court in December.
